In 2025, a major earthquake with a magnitude of approximately 7.7 struck central Myanmar near Sagaing on March 28, 2025, at 12:50 local time. This powerful quake was the strongest in Myanmar since 1912 and caused widespread devastation across Myanmar and parts of Thailand.
Impact in Thailand
The earthquake caused significant damage in northern and central Thailand, including Bangkok. In Thailand, at least 54 people died directly due to the quake, with many injuries and missing persons reported.
One of the most tragic incidents in Thailand was the collapse of a high-rise building in Bangkok, which resulted in numerous fatalities. Investigations revealed substandard construction materials and practices, including the use of poor-quality steel bars from a factory owned by Chinese investors. This collapse accounted for a large portion of the Thai casualties.
Buildings across multiple provinces including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and others suffered damage, with reports of cracks in condominiums and damage to temples, schools, hospitals, and government buildings.
The Thai government and disaster agencies conducted evacuations and inspections in the aftermath, with some hospitals temporarily relocating patients due to structural concerns
